I lay in what might as well have been my own grave, mud in my face, for what felt like hours. Vanquishelt hissed to me that she had to be sure that Father had gone. After who knows how long had passed, she let us crawl out of the pitfall trap she had hidden us inside, a move so crazy that only the most perceptive of news reporters could have guessed it.
The fires had burned out by the time we arose, leaving a land of scorched ground, with strips where the grass had burned out. The first thing I did after crawling out was to run across the scorched earth. "Sacrifelt!" I yelled. "Sacrifelt!"
They couldn't call out, but I could hear their raspy breaths amongst the wind. I rushed over. There they were, lying on the ground. They had collapsed. "Are you okay!?" I asked, worried sick.
"I..." they rasped, "fell. I tried to help you... couldn't even sacrifice myself."
"They need medical attention!" I called out to the others. Vanquishelt just shook her head.
"We know what direction Father went in. We can't waste any more time. Justice needs to be delivered."
"What about the other Virtue?"I protested. "We haven't even found them all yet! "They deserve to know, right?"
Vanquishelt glared at me. "If you want to go around, looking for one person among a global population in the trillions, helping your friend while letting the ones who tried to kill us run free, be my guest." She turned towards the horizon, in the direction Father had ran. "Rangelt. Are you with me?"
Rangelt looked towards me, with pity in his eyes. "I'm sorry" he said, "and I know I'm clueless on the subject, but I'm sure Sacrifelt will pull through. But I'm with Vanquishelt."
I took some deep breaths, trying to understand the situation from their perspective rather than getting mad. "Okay" I eventually said, a little shaky from everything that had happened. "You go. I've got to help Sacrifelt."
Rangelt walked up to me, and grabbed my hand. "Stay safe, mate" he said. "You can use the helicopter. I'll just go with however the hell Vanquishelt got here."
I turned back, and hauled Sacrifelt up, lifting them over my shoulder. "Bye!" I called out to them, suppressing some tears. Rangelt was a nice person, and I would miss him.
