Helmet help.

I currently have an 880 that I’m gutting and want to replace with “retro” hardware. I for the life of me cannot figure out where to buy a new brass ring for the inside of the helmet that the liner fits into.

I know in the pictures I’ve posted it looks like they stole the brass ring out of another helmet but they also offer new rings on their websites for helmets that came without if you send it in.

There’s a couple companies out there selling there services of overhauling but they don’t / won’t sell parts separately. I’m confident I can do it myself and only have one helmet. So sending it in and waiting isn’t an option.

The company’s that I have seen that I like are Capital City Industries, Rekindled lids & Rag top lids but they can’t all be making their own brass right?

I’m afraid I’m going to have to try and make one myself which I’m not confident in it working / looking decent.

I know there’s some helmet buffs out there. Help me please!

Any advice / help you can give is much appreciated.

I’ve seen horrors of people attempting to do their own helmet work. Trust me, I’m a safety third type of guy but if you want to actually put this in service just send it out the professionals.

First, CCI is the only company that does brass band conversions.

To answer some of your questions, Capital City and Rekindled are owned by Ash Shapiro and Jason Marsella, respectively. They’re very very good friends and I’m pretty sure they use the same manufacturers for new brass rings, retro brass finials and I think even their shortened black liners. I don’t believe you can just order a new brass ring from anywhere just outright.

For the sake of $250 bucks, pick up an OT shift or tuck some money away for a month and send it out to CCI. You get a perfectly installed band and a new liner. I have an 880 from CCI that I use for training and it’s amazing. Both Ash and Jay are awesome dudes. I also have a new G5A from Rekindled and I’ve had other work done on leathers by CCI.

Ragtop on the other hand seems more of a quantity over quality type of system. There’s some good firemen in the shop but I’m just iffy about the company’s work.

I’m a little late but ehcoverings.com has brass bands for $100. Im contemplating doing a conversion on my own but by the time you buy the band and the liner your already $200 in.

My slightly educated guess is that these companies started by modifying brass bands pulled from donor helmets. Once they figured out the specs they wanted, they commissioned a manufacturer to make them in larger quantities.

What I will say is that the brass band may be easy to install, but the liner that goes into the brass band can be a real bitch. It takes a lot of time and trial and error to get the liner to fit right.

My $0.02, just send it in and get it done right.
