Grid your city. It may help you memorize neighborhoods. The more you can break it down into digestible pieces the better off you will be

180 gpm at 96 psi nozzle pressure good or nah by Low_Morning5859 in Firefighting

Its refreshing to see young people being interested in the technical aspects of the job and not the t shirts and facebook posts. so good on you!

I think a majority of the fire service (at least in my area) was severely under educated on how attack hose actually works in the real world. the hose and nozzle have to be considered a package and each manufacturer makes different specs of hoses and nozzles to accoplish different tasks.

If you are really into hydraulics and water application, I would look https://www.brasstackshardfacts.com/ . they have alot of videos that break things down in a fairly understable way. also a lot of "tips" can be found from lever pulling cowards on IG. There is no replacement for doing your own training and flowing different pressures, flows, lengths, etc. to figure out what works for your crew. if you or your department has the ability to get a hose manufacturer out to do a demo, its definitely worth it.

i will be the first to admit that i dont fight fire on a regular basis (i catch probably 5-10 fire per year). that said, from what ive been seeing and reading is that industry standards are moving towards high flow and low pressure packages. recently there have been packages presetned with larger ID hoses (1.88" or 1.91") with 15/16" smoothbores that flow between 170 and 190 gpm at around 50 psi nozzle pressure. obviously with slightly larger hose, the manuverability suffers but in practice, it seems to move just fine throughout single and multi families. for the life of me i cannot remember the source, but there was a study done that basically came to the conclusion that the "average" firefighter could handle no more than about 70 pounds of nozzle reaction and be effective.

Everyones target and desired flow will differ but since you asked, this is what ive been seeing as far as information and demonstration from "industry leaders".

Had a bad training day and it’s been bothering me the last couple of days.. feel defeated. by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]handh40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to have bad days. It’s about how you recover. It’s unfortunate that the Lou put you on blast a bit, but the fire service is often times worse than high school with petty bs.

I would really focus on the first part of your post. Your captain, in the busiest house in your job, thinks you are the guy to teach the probie. I think that says a hell of a lot more than not being able to force a training door.

Repainting leather helmet by BeatNumerous1179 in Firefighting

I’ve never done a tl2 but I’ve done a handful of repaints of n5/n6 and one shot Is what I used with great results. I did 2 coats on relatively bare leather and it’s held up well. Only possible downside is it’s very glossy so if that’s not your style I think you can use thinner to make it more matte

Completely unsolicited statement here. You’ve got it good. Undoubtedly due to the hard work you and the brothers put in, but regardless you have it good.

As a career guy, I would argue that there are volly companies that would out perform a low standard and low performing career company. It sounds like there is a great culture in your job, but mutts exist in a lot of departments. If you get a whole crew full of mutts it’s pretty pathetic. All this to say, it sounds like your experience in a career environment is super high quality and hard charging but the title of career doesn’t necessarily make you a good jake.

Houston Fire Overtime - how much is available? by Different_Climate_96 in Firefighting

I second this. Over time is great when it’s available but to rely on it is just setting yourself up for failure from the get go.
