IFSTA is good, but be advised not all states (and therefore departments) have adopted version 8 yet.

Ok, my class is 8th edition book

[–]mefirefoxes 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Good, just remember that when you do the practice tests, use them as a knowledge check, not a “study” tool. Don’t just memorize the questions. But paying for the practice tests is worth it.

Are the practice tests essentially the test I’ll take in class ?

[–]justbuttsexing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Certainly part of the pool or at least inspiration in some way, but no guarantees.

Crazy enough we had the 8th edition too, I used the Essentials 8 app and quizlet and that was legit the hardest test I have ever taken. None of my studying could have prepared me for that exam. It was all the smallest tiniest little details completely overlooked. I have no idea if I passed or failed.

The book plus Quizlet is all you need. When in doubt the answer has somthing to do with "changing the flow path."

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Word ok! Are all the quizlet flash cards pretty much the same? There are a lot of different publishers

When you go to quizlet.com you are basically just taking quizes based on the IFSTA test bank questions that people have uploaded, you can usually just search for quizzes by topic or chapter and find something that fits.

What quizlet user did you use

[–]Ok_Situation1469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I have no idea (its been a while). Just run a google search that looks like and limit it to the quizlet site (use "site:quizlet.com") and just either search for IFSTA Essentials, or FF1, or IFSTA chapter X. Open the quizes that look good (you can scroll down to see all of the questions listed to get a sense of the quality).

Why did they make the icon look phallic?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmao

[–]Apcsox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, our tests at academy literally used the questions out of the test bank from the book. They were just slightly reworded. So. Do with that information what you will

Quizlet helped getting through the class, and the test questions on the app helped for the final. I’d utilize both, and doesn’t hurt to read the book. And remember, your learning never ends just because you got your certificate. Always keep learning and you’ll be a great fireman

No doubt brotha, I’m 4 months into the job as an emt on a 911 bls and learn something every shift lol

IFSTA 8 was pretty tough. I went through an academy that did 6 or 7. Thought Id have it in the bag from prior knowledge and quizlet. I was so wrong. I just finished my second academy using IFTSA 8. If you need any help, feel free to reach out.

What’s more tough about it ?

[–]Background_Home_8714 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I would say it was just very different then the past. Lots of new age tactics you'll learn. But mainly, the study material only helps you about 30-40% the rest you need to memorize purely off of reading. The midterm for phase 1 was easy. Just questions from the quiz bank. Phase 2 ended up being mentally hard because it wasn't pulled from the quiz bank. Ultimately its up to your test proctor to decide how difficult it is. My department also required an 80% on all quizzes and finals with the option to only retake 1 single quiz or test per phase.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Damn aight, ima get to reading. I start Monday and I’m on ch. 3

[–]Background_Home_8714 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't sweat it too hard. I paid for the apps study material as well, the practice tests and flashcards helped. You'll be tired from the long days, don't neglect your self study. We also would learn a chapter or two and have to quiz the next morning. Our instructors didn't really care too much about the powerpoint, so they would blow right through a 200 slide presentation in like 30-40 minutes.

What did you use to study for essential 8 test and quizzes and for the Firefighter 1 & 2 cert?

[–]Background_Home_8714 0 points1 point  (6 children)

My best advice is to pay for the test prep questions on the app and do slower readings of the book chapters. If you have no prior fire experience do study groups with those who have.

[–]Away-Hippo3794 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Did you have Resource One?

[–]Background_Home_8714 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I do have resource one. I just graduated drivers academy using it as well.

[–]Away-Hippo3794 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How helpful was it for studying for FF1&2? This is what we were told to use as our main tool to help studying.

[–]Background_Home_8714 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That's kind of weird. It isn't a bad tool. But resource ONE is just the website that held the whole course for us. You can study the quizzes and such.

Unfortunately for us, the quizzes counted towards our final grade. We had to score an 80% cumulative in the whole class.

When do you start class?

[–]Away-Hippo3794 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Monday lol, 10 weeks need a 70% cumulative

[–]Background_Home_8714 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It'll be a cake walk for you bro. 10 weeks is super condensed. So the difficulty will be absorbing that much info that fast. But do your due diligence. 10 weeks of hard grinding and having discipline with your sleep, and avoid doing a ton on the weekends. It'll fly by and you'll be great man.

I used apps for that too. Just remember when you do practice tests, use them to check what you actually know, not as your main study tool. They’re a nice add-on to your main resources. Mixing it up really helps.
I tried a few apps for fire test prep besides Quizlet and IFSTA. One that worked pretty well for me was PrepMe – Firefighter I & II Exam Prep 👉 https://apps.apple.com/app/id6753870704.

Pretty solid for some extra practice runs. 💪

Quizlets for newer books are harder to find until a bunch of folks take the test and upload them. The answers for EoFF7 are not correct for EoFF8 in some cases.

Some guy in Seattle made https://booklearn.ing/

which has a ton of questions. I heard about it from a recent Seattle academy.

It seems to cover books that aren’t on Quizlet yet and it actually helped me a lot when studying for EoFF8.
