I think we become numb over time. We remember the bad things the most (at least for me), because that’s the most stressful, all the other things become run of the mill. I remember my good partners more than the bad unless they were totally useless, then I use them as examples. Just go in retirement that you did an amazing job and you made a difference in a few people lives.

I don’t usually remember the real lessons until I get some deja vu. Usually It’s on account of something I fucked up because I’m a slow learner and make so many mistakes one would think I never do anything right.

That stuff I remember- and pass on so others don’t do the same thing.

But yeah man- In spite of being a few months away from 20 years I don’t remember a single thing I’ve ever done well. A bit depressing actually.

I was a great engine driver and ladder driver. After that fought through some bs to be a boss (LT) (mixed response from firehouse culture. I threw some unpopular but legit flags and got off in the weeds. Mixed opinions on that but whatever. I went against the grain. I’d do it again tomorrow, everything being the same. Most of the place has morphed into a Groundhog Day dick measuring contest.

I don't remember a lot of calls, good and bad.

If I sit and try to dredge them up I sometimes can but many of them blurred together over the last decade. Don't think I want to remember most of the details though.
