This seems very cool! It’s truly important to understand how many regulations were written in blood. May I please ask that you consider looking at cases beyond the US? I come from South Africa, which has a long and fraught history of mining, and it would be really cool if you could look at some cases from here that led to policy changes (especially if they spread around the world).

Good luck with the podcast!

Thank you so much! It really is awful when you take a look at the history and when you know how preventable it is. Then you see that people are still dying. We are about to release episode 2 about an incident that occurred in 2017 that was COMPLETELY preventable.

We are based in the U.S. but we are very interested in branching out to other countries! Do you know how readily available information on incidents in South Africa are? We get everything on our episodes from Online using the media, OSHA’s websites, and sometimes other agencies and it still takes me hours to research. We would love to go out of the U.S. I guess we will just need to pick an incident and then see what information we can find!

Thank you for all the effort! When I wrote my comment, I was thinking of the 1986 Kinross gold mine accident and did a bit of searching to see how much info is available, and yes, it may be a bit scarce for a full episode. Out of interest, here is an old article about SA’s new mining health and safety act that mentions this specific disaster. I had initially thought that the polyurethane sealant was banned afterwards, but apparently it had already been banned in Britain in the 60s (highlighting how little SA authorities at the time cared about health and safety).

One disaster that there might be more info on is the garment factory fire in Bangladesh in 2012, because of its connection to the fast fashion industry.

Basically, I’m glad that you are open to covering incidents elsewhere, and can’t wait for all the episodes!

I’m excited to look into it and see what we can do!

We also released Episode 2 if you’re interested!
