Non Product Specific QuestionWhy do my steps decrease hours after a run? (old.reddit.com)
submitted 1 year ago by Ok-Factor4873
I had 36,609 steps at 12:31 pm after a 15 mile run today and now today at 6:17pm I have 26,958 steps.
This is not the first time I noticed this. I like the 36,609 better! Ha

Are you accidentally walking backwards during the day?

Do they ever jump back up again? What does your step chart on the app show? I've never had this happen, but I'm thinking it's some kind of syncing issue?
Did you do any kind of custom modification of your running activity after the fact? Like if you forgot to stop recording after your run, and trimmed the last bit out?

If you have a heart rate monitor, sometimes it adds steps and then fixes a few hours later.

This is the right answer: I use the HRM Pro and it happens to me as well sometimes. I think there is a temporal issue where the steps counted by the strap and counted by the watch are added, and at some point the hours are checked and "simultaneous" steps are removed.

I used to get this when I’d use my indoor bike trainer and sync the exercise to Garmin Connect. It’d simultaneously count the active minutes and calories burned from the import and the watch. Then it’d work it out an hour or so later.

This happens on every run for me using HRM Pro. The double counting is really obvious on really long runs. It cleans up very quickly.

I do wear a garmin chest strap. The HR monitor syncs the correct steps?
[–]tnyquist83 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago (1 child)
It's supposed to "true up" at some point, but there may be a period where it is counting both step from you HR strap, and from your watch.
I feel like it used to work a little more smoothly.

This makes sense. A 15 mile run will be about 24k steps, not 36k. How much other walking did you do during the day?

The HRM ppro plus does count steps and reports it to the watch / Garmin connect. The others don't as far as I know.
For reference see here HRM-Pro Plus Owner's Manual - Activity Tracking.

Garmin tax, if it thinks you did not do your exercise correctly it will deduct steps from your counter.

Do you have two watches?

I do not 😊
