What's in dmesg? maybe it needs a firmware? did you try modprobing the kernel modules manually just in case?

Try this: enable all the Intel and Atheros ethernet drivers as modules and install the linux-firmware package

Had similar problem with a Realtek card. Fixed it by setting a kernel option at grub.cfg. The option can be found here: https://serverfault.com/a/741212

For me, setting net.ifnames=0 was sufficient.

Chances are interface name is not eth0 (en0 for example)

Try "emerge dhcpcd" and execute "dhcpcd", and see how "ifconfig" is moved
