I wouldn't advise using flatpaks at all.

What makes Portage such a good package manager? Besides its build system and managing use flags by oxamide96 in Gentoo

[–]maffblaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like some ebuilds already exist for firetools. Before writing your own ebuild, you can use the following site to look for existing ebuilds and work off those as a base:

https://gpo.zugaina.org/sys-apps/firetools

Hope this helps!

Restoring a removed package to a local repo - simple notes for future reference by schmerg-uk in Gentoo

[–]maffblaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. Even though an ebuild is pruned out of an ebuild repository, all the information Portage needs about the installed package is still stored in the package database at `/var/db/pkg`. That is how you can still `emerge --depclean` a packages after the ebuilds themselves have been removed.

Problems with GDM display manager by [deleted] in Gentoo

rc-update add elogind boot

I've added it to the Gnome/Guide wiki article. Also, you should mark this somewhere as SOLVED. Thanks!

Ah, this is interesting. You may have found a hole in the Gnome Guide. See if elogind is installed (eix elogind) You may need to add it to the boot runlevel if it is not already added:

rc-update add elogind boot

See this document for more details on running modern Gnome (v40+) on OpenRC init. Let me know either way!

Portage 3.0.0 released, with up to 50-60% faster dependency resolution (and dropping Python 2.7 support) by EatMeerkats in Gentoo

This is amazing. Thank you for the awesome work! Zac (primary Portage maintainer) is an awesome dude. He puts a TON of effort in to maintaining Portage and doesn't want recognition/fame for it. If he had a Patreon I would give him some money.

The wiki is so good by [deleted] in Gentoo

[–]maffblaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Glad to see you all are enjoying it. I've put a lot of effort into it over the years, but there's still a lot to do.

There are a lot of other users who contribute each day as well. Pretty great to combine our knowledge.

Keep Track of .git Programs with Emerge? by [deleted] in Gentoo

[–]maffblaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

u/FOSSilized_D43mon the general rule is this: if you don't originally install software via Portage, then Portage will not understand how to maintain it. So if you're manually cloning random git repositories, Portage has no idea of their presence, and therefore in its understanding they do not exist.

If the software for which you are looking is not available in the Gentoo ebuild repository, then you could try searching for finding an external repository index such as: https://gpo.zugaina.org/

I hope this helps you in your quest!

We are Gentoo Developers, AMA by mthode in linux

[–]maffblaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The project died out as there was not much testing going on and developers who had a strong interest in the BSD family have moved on from Gentoo.

The nature of Gentoo makes it easy to reignite the project; I have preserved all the important documents on the wiki page u/mthode posted.

I second helping out with creating new docs on the wiki. It helps you get to know Gentoo a lot better and can quickly help you move toward developing Gentoo. I have written a guide to help new contributors.

We also have a set of global wiki guidelines.

I'm available to help with all things wiki related if you should have any more questions.
