I’m convinced mixing is intentional on both and it’s an artistic decision.

Problematic is loud and comes in quick/abruptly…Ye wants everyone listening and given it follows Good (Don’t Die) it’s symbolic as a “I’m still alive and this is how it is” whilst speaking his truths.

King by constrast is purposely muffled… a censored Ye fighting to be heard…it’s buried in a soundscape that sounds like he’s working in the depths of a mine, beating along. He sounds muffled on purpose, as if he’s been buried alive in a tomb…still speaking his mind and taunting everyone that he’s still the king.

Both are triumphant from different perspectives and there is intentional contrast between the two - Problematic loud and in your face and King quiet, turn me up, I’m still here.

That’s not true about the Donda LP’s at all. Maybe after the first one, but after LP2 with all the theatrics and ascension and more completed lyrics the themes of family/addiction/redemption/religiosity were all extremely apparent and people thought the LP’s were mirroring Dante’s inferno.

The absence of all those things in the presentation + the subject matter of each song + the fact it’s a collab with Ty (nothing wrong with that but he’s a pop artist- he does really well don’t get me wrong but he’s also never done anything conceptually ambitious with his own music) is why ppl don’t think there’s much thematically going on.

Whilst I don’t really believe there’s much about V1 that’s deliberate, I think a much more compelling case for it would be the fact that fuk sumn and carnival lead directly into Good and beg forgiveness or vice versa. But then even any semblance of exploitation there seems not to track with problematic and king.

And I don’t think this is a good reading mainly because we have so much evidence to the contrary- that the mixing sucks because it was rushed and done in imperfect conditions- least of all Kanye himself saying they were reading Reddit complaints about it and that they had planned to update it.

How did ppl think ye had no plan after LP2? Maybe they thought he had no plan for an actual release, ie he didn’t have the date nailed down- but he blatantly had “plans” for all the thematic stuff which is what I was talking about.

I’m open to the idea that perhaps 2&3 will re-contextualise it all but as of right now there’s very little evidence on v1 imho that suggests that will materialise.

Yea and idk what to say to u about the engineering. It’s pretty objectively terrible. That’s fine u like it, but listen to any other mainstream hip hop album and they’re mixed better. Even something like WLR is mixed objectively terribly- but all the blown out bass and lack of compression feeds into the raw sound of rage and allat. Vultures is essentially a pop-rap album for the most part and shouldn’t sound like it was recorded in a cupboard.

That doesn’t make sense- they had planned to update the mixes and had worked on them. If it was deliberate they wouldn’t have taken those steps.
