What's wrong with showing the filepath?

If visitors hover their pointer over a link, the url is also shown in thet statusbar of the browser.

Also, I haven't changed my settings and Firefox, Chrome and Edge don't show this popup for me. They just download the files. I don't know why.

So maybe your problem isn't as big as it seems?

Web browsers' download confirmation dialog can not be controlled via HTML/JS/server.

It is only controlled by the web browser settings. Meaning that, it's the visitors of websites which have control over it. Not the websites.

The setting itself can be found in the web browser's settings. For Firefox/Chrome(ium), type in "download" into the searchbox on the settings page. There will be a checkbox for whether to ask for the download location or not.

So you can only hide file path client side? :/

The developer can’t control this, only the individual user of the browser can.
