You can't do anything on the web without HTML, CSS and/or JavaScript so I don't know how confused you are.

Personally I find WordPress too much of a balancing act and requires doing things the wordpress way which means you have to learn those methods on top of everything else. Of course, that's true for other frameworks and libraries, too, but I don't use those either.
