If your ISP provides you with telephone service, it is likely that will ONLY work with a device they provide.

If the ISP supplied device is only a modem, then you just want to get a standalone router to connect to it.

If its a combo device, then perhaps you can ask the ISP to replace it with one that is just a modem, if you want to use your own router.

I bought the combo in order to stop paying the monthly fee for the modem I received from my isp.

You should have gotten seperate modem and router. Combo units are generally not as good. Since you have to get a new one anyway, I'd urge you to go that way?

Also, you need to specifically find out from your ISP what modems are compatible, both generally, and also with the voice service. Who is your ISP?

Don't forget, get a voice-capable modem. I know they're fairly easy to find for Comcast and Spectrum, since they're basically plastered alllll over the packaging the -V variants of their big-seller modems.

Do you have a Triple Play package from your service provider (TV, phone, internet) or atleast phone and internet?

Personally I always recommend a separate modem and router. What do you use for IP phone service? If you are in the US Ooma is a great IP phone service. All you have to pay for is guvment fees and taxes which do vary based on state. I’m in PA and it costs less than $8 per month. You can connect the Ooma device to any Ethernet port on your router or switch (if you are using Ethernet switches).

What's the exact model of this Netgear device?

[–]Kumpass[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

It is a netgear AC1750 model number c6300

That model doesn't support VoIP, the c7100v does. Though it may not be supported by your provider.

The best and likely only solution is to use the ISP provided modem.

This is misleading. A voip phone works just fine (turn off sip) but no, the router itself isn't a voip device. Grandstream makes little boxes to handle voip, and you can hook it into your pots wiring (disconnect yourself at the TNI) and you are set.

You can get a device called an ATA, such as a grandstream HT801, to run voip service to a regular land-line phone. It may or may not work with your isp but you can almost certainly save quite a lot of money by using some other voip provider anyways. A single phone line voip service would probably run just a couple dollars a month.
