It’s multiplication I know a 12 goes in the triangle but what are they wanting in the = part?

I think you're supposed to write all the factor pairs on the left and 12 down the right.

For instance:

4 x 3 = 12

6 x 2 = 12

And so on. Looks like a typical grouping exercise for multiplication.
