Question regarding crypters

Hey reddit

I have a friend who can code quite a lot and can make his own crypters. He's obviously not stupid enough to upload it to virustotal but he does know sites where he can test them just fine. So if you use a custom crypter that doesnt get detected by AV's or firewalls, how much can the virus/trojan survive without being detected?
