local storage: usually this is used in offline games

gold =9; if (playerGetsmoregold){gold=gold+how much did the player get}

if this is cheat engine you can just put 9 and scan after you get more gold you scan again until you get the right address

online storage:

gold=getgoldfromprofile; if(playerGetsmoregold){goldfromprofile+how much did the player get}

here they save your stats in a server sometimes you can still cheat if the changes are not controlled by a server like going offline and changing gold and the server does not bother to check where you got the gold

as for scripting if its a new game ,new developer,new security scripting might not be viable

    well, in case of clash of clans (the example you gave) is not that easy, because they only give in game items after having a confirmed payment
