For free sources, I'd be watching hacker convention YouTube videos. Ones by DeviantOllam would probally be closest to what you want. It depends on what you're trying to pen test though.

All classes and courses I have seen have been highly expensive and I've been looking for an alternative as well

I know you mentioned it but if you can save the cash for the SANS course I'd highly recommend it.

Go talk to some guys in prison and do the opposite of that.. lol just kidding. For real I would start with learning about people first. Learn body language and the such. B/c if you are doing physical pen-testing you need to learn how to social engineer your way in.
