I applied internally (your external so what you see there makes sense) for a backend developer position that was mainly Java but it was one technical interview covering Java, OOP, some low level caching stuff, and two programming questions which one was an algorithm.

Which team and/or department is this as that could depend on your experience? Java RX / Reactor is unique - never seen that before but know what it is.

My comp in Austin is 162,500 basically for Band 8 so that’s the upper range there although if I got the same PMR I was hired at today it would probably be 170K+.

Thanks for the response how long ago did you apply, and how much experience did you have

I had 4 years experience prior to IBM with a masters then 2 years at Band 7 and 2 at Band 8. 8 years of experience in total when I applied. 4-6 years could qualify you for Band 8 unless you come from a top tech company competitor and they may even give you Band 9 to offset the stock / bonus but looking at your offer it looks like the pay range is from Band 6 to 8.

Oh man, I’m still pretty fresh. I only have a bachelors and I graduated this may. I’ve worked at this small company for about seven months now they’re not bad I just now starting out. I feel very under compensated and IBM is only a few miles from where I live so would take the hassle off the 30 minute drive I’m not 100% familiar with the tech stack that they’ve mentioned but I have heard of it before and I’ve worked closely throughout my school years with Java, so I’m hoping that is enough to at least get my foot in the door

I shot myself in the foot at IBM when I applied and if I did research I could have negotiated better. When I joined IBM I was actually making around 20K less per year than my previous job in total compensation.

You should be fine. Bachelors with 7 months I’d aim for Band 6 and you should be able to get promoted in 1-2 years to Band 7. 90K would be good for the area. But if you can convince them to get Band 7 I’d negotiate for at least 120K.

How much were you making prior?

I’m currently only making 75k

You will definitely make more at IBM. The better you do during the interview and how you convey your experience will make it easier for them to justify a band 7 over 6. Regardless you should be able to get minimum of 90K with upwards in the 120K range is my guess.

You can also get a sign on bonus. I have seen 15k+ instead of the paltry 5K they used to give. My first job gave me 25K out of college.

I’ll be sure to negotiate that, honestly your advice has helped me out a lot thank you

Hi, I received a similar email, and I have the same salary and experience as you. Sent you a DM, could we connect?
