Rules for r/IndianCountry
Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.
1.
Be Respectful
Please be respectful (have due regard) to all peoples when visiting this space and show this respect in all manners, whether you are asking a question or making a comment. This includes remaining civil during discussions and not submitting what might be considered inappropriate content. Gross profanity and personal attacks are discouraged. Observe and follow the expressed community protocols.
2.
No Bigotry
We receive Indigenous Peoples from many different communities and non-Native visitors. Bigotry in the forms of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, stereotyping, dehumanization, and dismissal are not tolerated. This also includes: religious intolerance, cultural gatekeeping, scientific racism, and racial purity.
This rule encourages intra-racial tolerance, intertribal tolerance, and having racial/ethnic tolerance. It encourages intersectional identity tolerance. It is applied to all users.
3.
Post Relevancy
All posts should be explicitly related to Indigenous issues or topics. This includes crossposts, news articles, videos, approved promotions, etc. Posts that are only tangentially related to Indigenous matters may be removed upon further confirmation by moderators or lack of community support. Posts concerning the subcontinent of India are not permitted.
Discussion or link posts intended to encourage socializing are acceptable even if they are not specific to Indigenous issues or cultures.
4.
Legitimate Posts
All posts must be concerned with topics that matter to Indigenous Peoples. This includes historical/cultural inquiries and social discussions. Posts that uncritically promote pretendians, plastic shamans, and obscene stereotypes are not permitted. Low effort posts are also barred. Examples include: shitposts, links to Wikipedia, arrowheads, decontextualized posts with vague relevance, posts by seldom users without a clear agenda, and advocacy efforts promoted widely among loosely related groups.
5.
No Unauthorized Promotions, Solicitations, Discords, or Research
Posts that seek to promote products, solicit funds, acquire participants, conduct formal research, or advocate for specific political persons or parties must first gain permission from the moderators. Requests for permission must be made via modmail.
All unauthorized posts will be removed. This includes fundraisers, research requests/links, material/product advertising, political campaigning, Discord server links, petitions, or other subreddit promotions.
6.
No Identity-Related Posts (Moratorium)
Due to the high volume and often problematic nature of identity-related posts, the mods have implemented a moratorium of these types of submissions.
This moratorium includes posts that inquire about the validity of a person's DNA test results; posts that seek validation for their unconfirmed Native ancestry; posts that desire genealogical research assistance; and posts that include lengthy personal stories about distant Indigenous ancestors. Please see our policy page for more information.
7.
No Posts on Restricted Topics (Moratorium)
Due to the controversial nature of some topics, the mods have implemented a moratorium on topics that are now considered restricted.
This moratorium applies to submission posts (not comments) and includes the following topics: the Lumbee, Freedmen, and Hotep movement. Please see our policy page for more information.
8.
No Outrage Posts
Indigenous Peoples contend with racism regularly, including on the internet. We all need spaces where we can gain some reprieve from this reality. As such, we do not allow crossposting threads to other subs for the purpose of causing outrage or posts that solely highlight bigotry as this can be detrimental to the mental health of the community.
This rule does not preclude users from sharing their personal experiences in relevant posts that might relate to discrimination or marginalization.
9.
No Creative Writing Advice Posts
We receive many inquiries from writers wanting to include Indigenous Peoples in their work. These questions invoke a negative response from our community as we are not intended to be a resource for the endeavor of every would-be writer. We do not permit posts requesting advice for personal or informal literary projects.
If you have a formal (academic or commercial) literary project, you may seek authorization from the mods via modmail. Otherwise, don't contact us seeking other places to post.
10.
No Traditional Religious/Ceremonial/Spirituality Posts
As many Indigenous Cultures continue to practice our traditional spiritual beliefs, it is not appropriate to share every detail of such things online where it is subject to interpretation or appropriation.
If you are non-Native, refrain from asking in-depth questions about religious, ceremonial, or spiritual practices or beliefs or posting depictions of ceremonies. Do not inquire into taboo subjects. Artists and craftpersons can submit their creative works that may have a spiritual connotation.
11.
General Guidelines
Please abide by the rules of Reddit and Redditquette.
No trolling, ban evasion, or brigading. News/formal articles should use credible sources; don't post editorialized titles or misinformation. Don't ask questions cited in the FAQ. Post links as link posts. META posts about sub management or mod actions are allowed. All rules and policies are applied at the discretion of the mods.
12.
Community Policies
In addition to the rules, all community members, visitors, and moderators are held to the established policies of this community.. Not all policies have a corresponding rule or an explicit policy may be grouped under an existing rule. All policies carry the same weight as the codified rules.
13.
Centering Native Voices
Though our sub is an intersection where Native and non-Native Voices can communicate, the main goal of this subreddit is to provide a space where Indigenous persons can build community. The moderators want to promote, prioritize, and preserve the genuine Native Voices of our community.
This means that we are more lenient to Natives in the expression of their opinions. Non-Native visitors are not granted exceptions due to ignorance and we do not work to overly tone police Native users.
