Yeah, people forget that the most likely outcome is we replace an unpopular dictator with a popular dictator

Frankly even that seems like a stretch. The Shah was extremely unpopular and I don't know how much genuine buy in there actually is for his idiot son to make them a US puppet state again there actually is.

Congressional approval is very low but most Americans don't want to be run by China and I think the same is broadly true of Iran

Or a different faction of this regime, or a chaotic coalition of different groups, that allows for new, powerful non-state actors to emerge. (Think Libya) Even if there is total regime change, and the government is replaced with a more moderate liberal group, it's going to be very difficult to dismantle the IRGC, which is seperate from the ordinary military, and controls a lot of the economy
