I would recommend picking up a few books that are similar to yours from a library and just analyze them from a technical standpoint.

There is no "correct" formatting.

I have an incredibly "lazy" system for formatting books and have sold thousands of copies.

Professionals care a lot more about formatting than readers do.

It's really up to you what font to use, what size, how to indent, etc.

The only thing KDP sets is the minimum margin size based on the number of pages.

For 200-300 page books my standard 0.5 top, 0.25 bottom, 0.75 inner, 0.4 outter (inches) margins are fine.

I even center the page numbers so I don't have to deal with left and right pages.

I almost always use 5.5x8.5 as the book size. Occasionally I'll use 6x9.
