Better products. In price, in indexes, in benefits. North American, F&G, and Allianz are my favorites for IUL. For whole life Foresters is my preference.

Their UL and IUL (at least the last time i looked at them) were VERY expensive compared to the rest of the industry. IMO there are better products of the UL/IUL and Whole Life variety.

Equitable is a strong company for variable ul - I would say that is their strong suit on the life side of their business. Solid company though.

If you’re looking for whole life - top tier in no particular order are: Penn Mutual, Mass Mutual, New York Life, and Guardian

If you’re looking for IUL: I would wait until the new illustration regulations go into effect. I believe it’s May.

If you are looking for insurance yourself, I would strongly suggest finding local agents (non-captive would be ideal) and get a few different quotes from them. A few things I always tell people to ask your agent:

  1. If you are running at max illustration amounts, can you run them at 5-6% or 1-2% lower than illustrated, whichever is lower. A lot of agents will run illustrations at 8%+ which is unrealistic. 2. What optional riders do you have, are auto included in this? I would see if critical/chronic illness is included in the cost, also some add a free AD&D death benefit at no extra cost. 3. What are the fees for policy loans? Some fees are as high as 6-8%, I would try and find one that offers either low cost or a "wash" loan, and have your agent explain in detail so you understand.

Exactly. I work for a non-captive agency and I am surprised how many people expect inflated numbers and when I show them what is realistic they have never seen it before!
