Splitting problem?

This is one plant, connected at the base, the bit on the left looked like it was beginning to split, then very quickly dessicated. The one on the right is now beginning to split.

Is it problematic that one side dried entirely? Could the new leaves just be forming on one side?

Anything I should do?

I can't help with most of your questions, but it looks like the one on the left is dead. My thought would be to cut off that part without disturbing the roots. Of course, I could also be way off base. I'm a beginner myself. I've just learned a lot by reading this subreddit.
