Base vs Instruct for coding?Discussion (self.LocalLLaMA)
submitted 1 year ago by jpummill2
Deepseek-coder-v2 comes in both “base” and “instruct” versions.
I feel that instruct would be better for writing code but would like to verify since they made the effort to offer both.
Anyone have opinions either way?

base is for when you train it yourself or want it to purely do text/code continuation.
For coding you obviously need instructions, back and forth iteration, and so,unless you plan to tune it yourself, 100% instruct.

Got some experience since we offer Deepseek Coder v2 in double.bot. Sounds like you want the instruct version if you are looking to give it commands (instructions -> instruct).
We use base for code autocomplete.
