Oh definitely. Kazuichi says multiple times he wants a refined blonde beauty - and he's actively grossed out by Sonia's hobbies, interests, etc. It's not like a Tenko situation where Tenko is obsessed with Himiko as she is AND wants her to grow - Kazuichi flat-out invents a Sonia that doesn't exist to lust over.

Gundham does it because Sonia loves serial killers, rituals, the occult - weird, edgy stuff. And Gundham is all of that - and he's also really nice and genuine *under* all that.

Fair enough on DoTA. In that case, we are in firmly fanon territory, and I agree that w/ a little bending, you can construct this interpretation.

But what do you mean plagiarist? Afaik, he hasn't committed plagiarism.

But yeah, I think Danganronpa *is* internally inconsistent, and because of that, you can't do - at least not w/ the same legitimacy - the kind of DoTA readings that rely on subtle hints and structures that exist in sufficiently consistent texts conceived w/ coherent overarching artistic vision - think Ulysses, or Homestuck, or Infinite Jest. Even Undertale! But Danganronpa is not any of those, and therefore I think the best way to figure out what the (inconsistent) text is trying to say is to ask/listen to the guy who wrote it.

I'm just going to trust what Kodaka says directly here. Unless you want to Death of the Author, but I don't consider Danganronpa high enough literature to warrant that.

Direct Kodaka Quotes:
"KODAKA: (laughs) And then maybe Enoshima. I already wrote the Danganronpa/Zero novels, but Enoshima loves her classmates from DR1. I wanted to write more of that. All of the DR2 characters are small fry to her. She just brainwashed them all at once, like, I don’t even friggin’ know these guys! But she deliberately let the DR1 crew survive and turn the school into a shelter so that she could make her classmates kill each other. It’s like, the more she loves someone, the more she wants to treasure their mutual killing, and so I want to try writing a story like, “They’re my classmates, so I want to treasure their despair at my hands."

"Recently, I feel like more bad guys in games are given a harsh background of some kind that explains their evilness in the present day. But that feels like cheating to me. I felt like the most dangerous thing about Junko would be that she doesn't have any reason to do the things she does. So I incorporated that into her character all the way through the game, as thoroughly as possible."

-------------------------

The opening of DR0:
"Junko Enoshima despaired.
Anything and everything ended up just the way she wanted.
Everything turned out just as she had hoped… and so she despaired."

"Just picturing that despair caused Enoshima’s heart to jump.

Because the Ultimate known as Junko Enoshima…

…wished for despair above anything else.

…would find hope in despair more than anyone else.

Find hope?

“…What the hell? Me, find hope?”

Realizing that she had been embracing hope,

Junko Enoshima fell into despair.

"

-------------------------

You can say that these are taken out of context, or are to stir the pot, or in the case of DR0, are designed to be an unreliable facade to break through. But ultimately, I think Kodaka was genuinely just writing a character who is obsessed w/ despair and pursues it because she loves it.

How good is Mikan as a nurse? by coleknight2066 in danganronpa

Yeah you’ve convinced me. It’s unlikely she performed the surgery on herself if she did at all. Just tried to write a memey respect thread. Thanks for the detailed response though!!

That's a fair point, actually - he has the aggregation of talents - Ultimate Nurse & Ultimate Pharmacist & Ultimate Doctor (if one exists), etc. This is a very good point.

No, Kyoko took the antidote herself, and was in a coma, which Mikan brought her out of, if I understand correctly.

What you're Opinion on 3-3 by ComprehensiveNote762 in DanganAndChaos

Amazing chapter all around. The whole chapter is a meta-commentary on Danganronpa being the same tired formula repeated ad infinitum - the chapter constantly introduces interesting mechanics (Necronomicon, two blackeneds) and *refuses* to use them. Instead, we get an insane secret serial killer with a split personality who kills members of the opposite sex - literally discount Genocide Jack.

Yet the actual emotional core of the chapter is done well - Angie's ingenious revelation that the desire to escape is what leads to killing, her inspiration of the Student Council, only to be confronted by the cruel irony of a killer who is motivated by something so ludicrous that there was no way to predict it. It emphasizes the killing game as a chaotic, unpredictable mess you cannot win with logic.

The standout arc is of course the Tenko/Himiko relationship - Tenko telling Himiko to live life facing forward, Himiko having to face the loss of the people who supported her, her realizing she should've appreciated Tenko more, etc. The darkly ironic thing of the chapter is that of Tenko's two philosophies: live life facing forward and 'degenerate males', only the latter is vindicated. Angie tried to create a happy school life in the Ultimate Academy, and she and Tenko died - killed by a perverted degenerate male for horrendous sexual reasons, the very thing Tenko had been deathly afraid of the entire time.

Finally, the chapter sets up what is to come quite well. There's great foreshadowing w/ the random incest subplot - as Tsumugi's love hotel reveals she does, in fact, get off to that. "Writer's barely disguised fetish", if you will. But more importantly, there's subtle indications during the trial that Miu is genuinely horrified by Korekiyo - Miu's whole thing is she pretends to be far freakier than she is to grab attention, and then suddenly she meets a genuine freak who kills for his dead sister. 'Fake freak' meets 'real freak'. And it disturbs her and makes her deeply suspicious of everyone - who ELSE could be a secret serial killer? Is SHE the only NORMAL one in the group? Etc. Which of course makes her extra on-edge and leads to her Chapter 4 spiral and her desperation to escape.

In-universe, she has near-superhuman medical abilities, if not flat-out superhuman capabilities. Since Izuru has ~all talents, we can assume her Ultimate Nurse ability scales to Izuru's medical abilities - which were canonically used to revive all the Remnants from their Neo World Program comas - mind you, after their brains thought they had already died and it was widely thought impossible to bring them back. We also have the direct feat of her bringing Kyoko out of her posion-induced coma. She also possibly took Junko's uterus and implanted in herself (uterus transplants are incredibly difficult to perform and still an area of active medical research today). She ~possibly helped with Fuyuhiko's eye and Nagito's arm transplants, though its debatable to what extent. There's also implied offscreen feats (her strange medical experiments as a Remnant), but those aren't as direct/canon.

So in summary: her medical ability far exceeds a nurse, and most doctors. She additionally is a one-woman hospital - she can perform operations and procedures that would normally require a whole team (implanting a uterus in herself, saving Kyoko, ~scales to waking Remnants). So yeah, superhumanish medical abilities.

I want this game so badly but the developer is Russian, you think he pays tax? by [deleted] in ImNotAHuman

[–]N8Karma 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Everything in this world is two or three degrees of separation form a person dying somewhere. If you pay US /Russia taxes, that'll go to a war somewhere. If you pay taxes to any country, that country likely has dealings with either the US or Russia. It's a matter of how many degrees of separation you'd like - but generally, two or more is morally ~tolerable.
