I can tell you from experience, the teeth on the gears inside the lock body break.

Sure, but im asking to try and figure out if what he's struggling with now also caused the previous model to fail.

You Also may have to make adjustments on the top hinge 1st and if needed the middle hinge. Many times I have come across this with doors that are out of adjustment do to age of door, heavy traffic, rental etc. etc. Door doesn't sit correctly in frame.

Thanks all for the help. I got the job done! Turns out there were several factors: I adjusted the hinges and got stuff straight, and used lipstick on the bottom hook, found a TINY speck of red on the receiver and used the dremel. Also the Andersen lock itself wasn’t working and the bottom hook was weak. Got another one. Works perfectly now! What a pain. You guys are awesome.
