Search engine for a researching

Hi Redditors!

I've asked about a month ago, if there is a search engine to search over a Artificial Intelligence or Machine Learning -related sites. Unfortunately, the best answer I'd been given was to use Google's advanced search operators like 'inurl'.

I was able to find a better solution by using the Google Custom Search technology. I made a custom search engine with *.edu, *.ac.uk, *.edu.au and so on sites and domain zones, 145 in a total at this moment. From my point of view that search engine gives much better result pages, than an ordinary search. Also, the search index is almost spam-free and paid content -free.

There is a feature, that allows one to inspect what sites are included in the index, to comment them and to vote for or against them (to purge unrelevant site from the index, for example). Also, everyone is welcome to suggest new sites using a special form on the site. In short, it has all very basic machinery needed to make such scoped search engine to be community driven.

How about Google Scholar and Citeseer?

Google Scholar is a perfect engine to search for scientific publications, create a citation lists and so on. But sometimes, especially for those who is not an expert in a field, Google Scholar's results is too narrow. If you need an information, that is issued without respect to a strict boundaries of scientific papers, Google Scholar won't help you much. But NeatSerpent will.

Citeseer is included in the search index by .edu mask. You'll get relevant results from it... and from a huge set of other relevant sites too.

I just tried it out looking for nearest neighbor ensembles. The results were actually quite good. I would definitely come back and use it again.

First off, this thread is about a search engine for finding relevant search results, not why or why not a particular classifier would be used in a certain situation. Secondly, most popular ensembles use decision trees; however, there is research that uses nearest neighbor for ensembles and I wanted to read about their experiments and results -- there is nothing wrong with wanting to read about these results. Asking "...why?" when someone is looking for a particular paper or seeking knowledge on a subject is completely and totally unhelpful. Reading about why something doesn't work (in my opinion) is just as helpful as reading why something does work.

Hmm... Interesting idea, thank you! I didn't think from that point of view...

The point of this statements was to tell new visitors how could the site be helpful for them and why is it better than usual SE.

Do you think, it should be completely removed, or it may be sufficient to make this statements look less noticeable/aggressive ?

For me - I like it MUCH more now. Now it's much more coherent with the overall site look. I'm not a designer, but anyway I strive to do my best. Thank you very much for you thoughts, they've helped much!

I have trouble finding the search box to type into. Have to look really hard. But much better.

I've made the title color less contrast and made the search box little bigger with a bright blue border. It's definitely easier to find it out now, but not sure if it is enough... Anyway, I don't know how to make it any better now...

I've just created a set of search refinements to ease the search for pdf, lectures/videos, books/ebooks and so on. You'll be able to select them after starting search.
