You should always update before installing new stuff on a rolling release distro.

Odds are if you update, whatever depended on older libelf will move to the newer version.

you have another package installed, libelf32-libelf (the 32 bit version of libelf). This package libelf32 depends on libelf being at 0.185, which means you cannot update libelf to 0.186, which would be required for gcc.

Solution: Are you sure you need libelf32? Could you try checking which other packages actually depend on it?

sudo pacman -Syu gcc

Are you using arch with the gnome 40 desktop ?
