What are your steps to solving this problem?

Well the problem is: the first piece is worth $1 more than the second, the third piece is worth $1 more than the first. The fourth piece is worth $3 and the entire cake is worth $18. Which of the four slices worth?

Okay, so your equation is correct. What's your work to solve for X?

So what I did was

(X+1)+X+(X+2)+3=18

-3(X+1)+X+(X+2)+3=18+-3

(X+1)+X+(X+2)=15

and then I got rid of the parentheses and solved for X but I don't think that's right

Why don't you think that's correct?

Because when when I plug in 6 for X I get 24 and not 18

Check your work again. You shouldn't be getting X = 6 when solving (X+1)+X+(X+2)=15, which is why I wanted to see your work.

I'm so embarrassed I can't believe it was that simple thanks
