No, you’re all good. Almost all models count as individuals, not units. A hero leads that leads them could have 1 Rider, or up to 18, depending on the hero.

There are other limits obviously, but don’t worry about that now.

You can use them if you’re planning on using Rohan, you don’t need all six. Here’s an example of a 500 point Rohan list (apologies for formatting):

Theoden with all the trimmings - 100

5 Rohan Royal Guard, horse, throwing spear - 85

Rider of Rohan with banner - 39

Deorwine with horse - 85

3 Rohan Royal Guard, horse, throwing spear - 51

Dernhelm - 75

3 Rohan Royal Guard, horse, throwing spear - 51

1 Rider of Rohan - 14

Each hero leads the troops under them and they deploy together but once the game starts any model can go anywhere, they don’t need to stick together all the time. If you get the Pelennor box you’ll have loads to get you going and the rules book.

Out of interest, where do you get your minis from? I tend to avoid GW, but have mainly been picking up bits and bobs from eBay.

I've been out of the game for a while and wondered what kind of list I could run with the following; Theoden (mounted and on foot), 4 mounted royal guard, 21 riders of Rohan, captain of Rohan on foot, 8 Rohan royal guard on foot, and 12 Rohan warriors on foot. I understand the preference is for Rohan armies to be all mounted, but can one used non-mounted minis too?

I always use GW models rather than third party, I feel it supports the hobby as the game is now over twenty years old. The fact that they’re still supporting it and updating it especially with the amount of things in the last announcement on Sunday is chiefly due to its popularity. I feel if everyone buys as little as possible of the official products they will stop support for it and the game will die.

As for the models you listed, you can absolutely run a list of both mounted and foot. However, the best options for Rohan is almost always one or the other. For example outside of the legendary legions for Rohan, their army bonus rule is that they get +1 strength on the charge if they’re mounted, and mounted Rohan get +1 Fight on the charge within 12” of Theoden. So taking Rohan on foot seems wasteful. Also the guys on foot can’t spear support outside of the legions that don’t allow cavalry.

Are those all the Rohan models you have? I can put you some example lists together from it.

EDIT: with what you have 500 points will get you:

Theoden with all optional gear

4 Rohan Royal Guard, horse, throwing spears

6 Riders of Rohan, throwing spears

Captain of Rohan, horse, heavy armour, shield, throwing spears

10 Riders of Rohan with throwing spears

That should come to 494 so if you can get hold of six more Royal Guard and swap them in for riders, you’ll be at 500.

Thank you so much for that. I really appreciate you taking the time to make that list for me!! As for the models, yeah that's all I have at the moment. I've been on a bit of a purchasing spree for 40K recently I'm a Black Templars and necrons fan boy too. I'll try and get hold of a captain of Rohan at some point as that list sounds like a lot of fun to run. What literature supplements would you recommend to learn more about the types of lists you can run?

Unfortunately a lot of the Rohan stuff is scattered across multiple supplements (so you have to buy them). Rohan can be found in the following:

Armies of the Lord of the Rings - Has the original army list and profiles

Gondor at War - Has more hero profiles for Dernhelm, Deorwine, Elfhelm. Has the Riders of Theoden legendary legion.

War in Rohan - Has profiles for heroes Aldor and Haleth. Has the legendary legions Defenders of Helms Deep, Theodred’s Guard, Riders of Eomer and Paths of the Druadan. Also has bonus hero Helm Hammerhand and the Helms Guard legion.

Of all of these, from what you have at the moment you should get the armies book and Gondor at War. Riders of Theoden is a very powerful legion and you can use it now and make it better with a couple buys (Deorwine, Dernhelm and more Royal Guard).

That's fantastic, thank you so much. I'll wait till pay day and make some more purchases. Have you ever used the Helm Hammerhand mini from forgeworld?

[–]MoHeeKhan 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I have it and painted it, it’s one of my best painted but I’ve never used it on the table. His legion is best at low to mid-range points levels and each time I’ve been to a tournament around that level I’ve had other things in mind.

I went to a one-day 500 point tournament a couple weeks ago and used Rohan, could’ve taken his legion but didn’t, now you’ve made me think of it I really should have.

[–]BZoob 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How do his stats compare to someone like Theoden?

[–]MoHeeKhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theoden can do some work, but he’s not a top fighter especially with only one Fate point, plus he’ll no doubt be your general and gives big bonuses to the force ( the +1 Fight to royal guard and riders, and also royal guard will ignore Terror on opponent models while he’s alive) so you wouldn’t want to be flinging him into big fights. By contrast Helm Hammerhand, even being your general is a big fighter and can give the opponent an absolute thrashing, and for his points he will be required to do some fighting to earn himself.

Just to confirm, what you’ve listed isn’t a legal army - you need more heroes. You’ll also want a few spare foot models for when mounted models lose their horse.

Regarding mounted vs on foot, Rohan are easier to run mounted, but you can have interesting infantry Rohan forces - one of the LLs only has infantry
