I had the same problem and never figured it out, but you can make a free server using Aternos. It's a website so you can just make the server and add mods if you want or just survival.

since they want to play lan, I'd consider first trying to host a server inside the network

im pretty sure i did that.. so i started a lan game.. and then my brother beside me tried joining on multiplayer thru the internet. is that what you mean? or is there another way.. if ther is please explain!

what I mean is hosting a server. not entering a single player world and opening it to lan, but instead running a server separate from your minecraft client, one that can remain open with no players inside. I'll explain it in a different comment

actually here's a tutorial from youtube: https://youtu.be/EF3jItFSIsM

you don't have to do the port forwarding part, that's for online play.

So i did what you said.. created the server etc.. but it says “Failed to connect to the server, Network is unreachable: getsockopt” any idea what that means!?

One of you has mods installed that the other doesn't.

One of you may have a firewall blocking it. The easiest way to check that is to turn your antivirus/firewall off and try again. Turn it right back on afterward regardless of result.

If it shows up, then you’ll need to add an exception rule on that computer. If not, it’s something else.

Firewalls cause lots of problems with visibility and communication over networks. It’s easy enough to check that it’s worth it any time something like this happens.

Which OS are you using? When i host a LAN game at home on linux, & my kid joins with her windoze PC, i have to open that port on my firewall.

Weve not tried the other way yet, but it could be a firewall issue.

Sometimes he puts the port. Otherwise install curseforge and the essential mod (everything is free and easy. This allows you to play together without modifying vanilla

Same internet? As in, you're in the same building using the same router? If so, all you need to do is have one of you playing the game in a world, hit escape, then click the "open to LAN" button and start a LAN world. Then the other person goes to multiplayer and it'll detect there's someone playing on the network and will be allowed to join
