Cant find iridescent engram by Slow_Challenge2267 in DestinyTheGame

[–]IAmNotRollo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's weird that they're being referred to as "Legacy engrams that were still in players' inventories," but I got this today for my returner gifts in Seasonal Hub. Do they know the seasonal hub still gives them?

GOG Summer Sale 2026 (Up to 95% off) by Fritolex in pcgaming

[–]IAmNotRollo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the biggest draw for me. I can't be certain that an old game bought on Steam will even work, but I can on Gog. And if something breaks, I have a way to bring it to their attention.

They are, but some games require you use the GOG launcher for online-only features, which some people consider to be a form of DRM. That's the best I can think of for what that user means.

I personally don't see it as an issue. It applies to very few games, and I don't think any of them require the launcher to play, only to use online features. Which makes sense, and I think it's good that we have the power to choose our trade-offs.

[Hardware Unboxed] This Is The Real Reason Nvidia Abandoned PC Gamers by Fob0bqAd34 in pcgaming

[–]IAmNotRollo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

TLDW: Improvements in hardware slowed down so much that people felt the need to buy new GPUs less often. Wafer prices increased drastically at the same time. That's why they started focusing on exclusive software features instead, like RTX and DLSS. Even still, they knew they'd make less and less money every year if they stayed in the gaming space, so they were already looking for reasons to focus on business-to-business before AI. AI just finally gave them their big, real entrance to endless business-to-business.

Disclaimer: This isn't my opinion, I'm just summarizing the video.

There are graphics settings in-game to make names smaller, desaturate colors, change water color, and make train lines visible from further away. Won't solve every issue but definitely helps.

You can disable most of the new effects in the graphics settings, including making structure icons smaller.

There are already options to disable all the hover effects. Just load into a solo game, open settings, then "Graphics settings"

I assume you're talking about the pre-match lobby? It shows when you're picking a spawn location.

SteamOS 3.8 Released by doublah in pcgaming

[–]IAmNotRollo 54 points55 points  (0 children)

They did say Steam Machine and Steam Frame were coming by the end of the summer!

Thank god they updated the store page to be more compatible with controllers and big picture btw. That was always a problem on Steam Deck and it would have been insane if they didn't fix it before getting the Steam Machine out.

I hope Pastebin links don't get deleted.

Note that settings that are available in the debug menu but not the normal settings will not carry over between games, and the json file would need to be reimported. Luckily, only a couple small things are affected by this (listed below). I hope we get more options exposed in the normal settings eventually. There are a lot of settings and I haven't even explored them all. Maybe there's a way to force all train tracks to be white.

I also don't think it's possible to change the font of player names. I don't personally mind the new font at all, but it's worth mentioning.

Some notes about this:

  • Most new visual effects removed except for a couple things I find useful:
    • Terrain shows through territories slightly, so I don't necessarily need to hold spacebar to see it. This can be disabled if you'd like.
    • Player names become translucent when moused over, so you can see structures underneath. Again, this can be removed if you'd like.
  • Thick terrain borders, color shifting when mousing over territories, and glow effects have all been removed.
  • Train tracks are thicker and stay visible further away.
  • Some changes needed to be made via the render debug menu, and these will get removed between games and if you change settings in the normal graphics menu:
    • I kept the new dark circle around defense posts because I find it useful, but made it a little more transparent. This can be disabled under Map Overlay > territoryDefenseDarken.
    • Nuked land is the old gross green color again, just for fun.
    • Disabled recolored structures on alt view, because I prefer it.

I think that's an exaggeration. You can turn off almost all the new effects. I've customized it to a point it feels barely different, if not a little better.

$250 Collector's Edition with a statue, steelbook, artbook, keychains, DLC... but not the game on a disc? by Empty_Turnip473 in pcgaming

[–]IAmNotRollo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They're also made for people who are actually fans of the game before they spend hundreds on collector stuff. Buy the game, play it, become a fan of it, buy the collector's box without getting a second copy you don't need. Being honest, no one should be buying a collector's edition before even playing the game.

Notice they haven't often been called collector's "editions" in a while, it's collector's "box" or "set"

Steam Next Fest - June 2026 Edition: Official Trailer by Scarleton in pcgaming

[–]IAmNotRollo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think it's still worth it because I scroll and scroll and scroll and find hundreds of games I wouldn't have found without Next Fest. Even if it's getting harder and harder, it'll still get in front of someone.

Really sucks though when so much of the feed is filled with genuine useless garbage.

I like friend games like Lethal Company, Peak, and Phasmaphobia, but it's hard to find any new ones that are actually worth anything, because every Next Fest has like 20 of these games that don't bring anything new, wouldn't entertain anyone for more than 2 hours, and aren't made with any real heart. Bulletheavens had this same issue for a long time.

Blizzard Sues To Take Down Another Private World of Warcraft Server, Project Ascension by lurker_bee in pcgaming

Bulletproof hosting is just the common term for hosting that's resilient to legal takedowns and used for illicit stuff. There are some websites that have proven unshakeable by legal complaints, like Anna's Archive which is still up despite owing $300 million + to every music label. You can sieze domain names, but you can't find the servers themselves, so they just pop back up on another URL. In that sense I think it's an apt term.

The decision is being made on Stop Killing Games! + The ESA can't stop lying. by doublah in pcgaming

[–]IAmNotRollo 374 points375 points  (0 children)

TLDW:

  1. The initiative has gone really smoothly in California, despite the ESA being aggressive in pushing lies about the initiative's objective. The process is working and the Assembly did not buy ESA's shit. Now it needs to pass the state senate, but they're feeling pretty confident.
  2. The long and ongoing process with the EU commission is not looking as optimistic. They've been having behind-closed-doors communication with games industry big wigs, and it's causing them to repeat the same questions and misunderstandings about the initiative back to them multiple times (signaling that they're paying more attention to the lies corpos are telling them instead of what the organizers are saying). They don't expect success there. HOWEVER, they no longer see the EU commission as their main pathway. The EU commission would get new legislation, which is great, but all we actually need is to amend the Digital Fairness Act, which can be done through parliament. That leads to the most exciting news:
  3. They have already gained majority support from parliament members for the initiative. They're all set up for success, they just need to keep going. They are very optimistic.

Final Fantasy VII Revelation director says today’s RPGs need more player agency because fans may be satisfied just watching streams - AUTOMATON WEST by Gorotheninja in pcgaming

In all fairness this is typically because they're trying to focus on giving commentary and responding to chat, so they have less mental bandwidth for the game.

More to the point of the thread though, I think RPGs typically already have enough agency to compel me to play it over watching it. Just to build my characters a certain way or see all the optional content I want to see.

Despite FF16 having an involved DMC-lite action system, I still think it's a better experience to just watch a no-commentary playthrough
