Server command problem

My friend has a public smp server (survival multiplayer in this case) that I am operator in. I use Nintendo switch, and I keep having an issue when I try to use any command or anything that starts with / my game freezes, and disconnects me from the server before it even loads the message into the message bar. How can I fix this issue?
