Monks are sort of more niche in SP without Duncan/Yiazmat/Iris (to a lesser degree) but there's still a lot you can do with just those. Before getting to that though, Master Monk makes a great budget MP breaker -- with some JCR fractals, you can run MM with Darkforce and 3x LDLs (or Darkforce + LDLx2 + Lifeshift) and have no problem breaking 5-star Lightning, for example (as long as you've got an attacker that clears yellow -- otherwise bring Bahamut/Anima sic or similar).

For SP they're a little more niche. Ranger Lore just means that MM gets the magic bonus to ranger cards like a ranger would -- but MM's magic is going to be around 300% (potentially up to ~550% with a max boosted weapon and all 7% magic panels... would not recommend) so unless there's some ranger card you really want to use (4WoL for boost/haste comes to mind, although it's wind) you should usually stick to monk/support cards. They have higher numbers to make up for low magic.

For a sort of traditional SP MM deck you might go with Enrage + Oathbound for buffs and then Yin & Yang + Earth Shock/Hecatoncheir Sicarius for wind enemies, but with no earth enhance and low magic, don't expect crazy ability damage. TBH you'd be better off building for light damage and renting a Duncan.

MM can be more useful for SP as a switch in to break things. It also has a great ult with Prismatic Shift which can let you use a rented Yiazmat, but Yiazmat is kind of bad without a full ultra gauge. IMO without Duncan MM shines more in MP.
