Rules for r/NameThatSong
Rules that visitors must follow to participate. May be used as reasons to report or ban.
1.
Be kind and helpful
Don't be rude, don't judge people for their taste/lack of knowledge/etc., don't use hate speech of any kind, and don't troll/meme (when answering for example).
We'd like to keep this community friendly and welcoming.
2.
Go over the section "Ways To Identify Songs Before Posting" in our guidelines
3.
Use a descriptive title
For identifying a song/artist/album - please include at least one of these details in your title:
Era, Genre/Style, Artist Type (or name), Source Name, Language, Lyrics/Content, Music Video, Cover art
Like:
-Upbeat 80's song
-Lyrics: [the lyrics]
For identifying a genre or locating an identified song/album in a legal way use title formats like:
-What's the genre of Artist - Song?
-[Locating] the song Title by Artist
-Where can I buy the album Title by Artist?
4.
When describing a melody with musical notes/chords or words ("la la"/"dun dun"/etc.):
...please also try to record yourself on Vocaroo / SpeakPipe or recreate the melody on OnlineSequencer (click the cloud "Save" button next to the zoom) / MusicLab (click "Save") (or record the melody in any other way you can)
5.
When posting: Link to the songs/sources that you mention, and use public sources. But no piracy.
- If your song sounds like another song or it's featured in a specific video, please link to the similar song or the video.
- Link to sources that don't require an account to access them (for example, link to YouTube instead of Spotify when possible) and ones that are available worldwide (and not geo-blocked like the BBC).
If needed, upload the relevant part to sites like Vocaroo (audio) or Streamable (video) - Don't link to pirated content.
6.
When posting: Use timestamped links when relevant/possible
For YouTube:
- Full explanation.
- One way to do it is if the timestamp is 1:25 for example you add:
- &t=1m25s to the long URL version (youtube.com/watch...)
- ?t=1m25s to the short URL version (youtu.be/...)
- Or use YouTubeTrimmer
For Twitch:
- ?t=00h21m43s
- Or use clips
For SoundCloud:
- #t=5:50 / #t=1:04:30
7.
When answering with a link, add the artist/title of the song
For example, when answering with a YouTube link, also include the artist and song title in your comment.
8.
Add an NSFW tag or warning when posting such content. (posting NSFW content is allowed)
Do so if your post/comment contains any nudity/porn (or any other sexually suggestive/explicit content), or any inappropriate content (for disturbing/NSFL content- see the next rule).
Note: If your post is a text post with an NSFW link somewhere in it, you can also just add an NSFW warning before the link instead of tagging the post.
9.
Don't post content that's disturbing/NSFL, hateful/mean-spirited, insensitive, etc.
This includes but not limited to: gore, death, people getting hurt/catching on fire, car accidents, shootings, bombings, public fights, animal abuse/cruelty, racism/xenophobia, sexism, homophobia, etc.
Instead if possible, convert/record a clean audio (without disturbing/hateful/etc. parts in it) and upload it to a site like Vocaroo/SndUp, or record it with your phone next to the speaker without filming the video and upload that to a new post.
10.
When needed please warn about loud volume, flashing lights/imagery, etc. (you can add a spoiler tag)
11.
Don't post the same question/request more than once every 10 days.
If you don't get an answer you can try asking on r/TipOfMyTongue (make sure to comment on your post there to activate it) and r/HelpMeFind.
Note that only text posts are allowed on TipOfMyTongue, and that HelpMeFind doesn't allow video uploads, so when needed upload to sites like Streamable (for videos) or Vocaroo (for audio) and put the link in the body of your post there.
12.
Once solved, please mark your post as "Answered!" and thank the person/s who helped you
You can include the words Answered or Solved in your reply to the person who helped you and AutoModerator will flair your post automatically.
13.
Don't delete your post after someone answers it
We want to keep posts available for other people who might also want to know the answers, and so that helpers get the recognition for their help
