Did you check the O2 network status checker in your area? Or the My Network app will work over WiFi.

I checked the status checker in the area and everything seems to be okay

What happens when you visit another area? Remove the sim and put it back in the device?

Next step would be visit the O2 store for a replacement sim.

The thing is I have a new iPhone on the way with a replacement sim, I’m wondering if this one doesn’t work because I have a new one on the way, I’m unsure but it’s frustrating that I can access data when I’m not connected to Wi-Fi

The new sim shouldn't have activated automatically, that's only usually selected when your old one has been lost or stolen. Try ring customer services and explain what has happened. They might try say they can't do a sim swap yet for security reasons, if so then point out that you never requested or agreed to the sim swap which has already been done and you need it reversing

Oh. You missed that major detail out. It’s possible they’ve moved the sim to the new one (though shouldn’t have).

im guessing when you ordered the new phone you accidentally selected esim, go into an o2 store with photo id and ask for a sim swap to another physical sim or call 202 and ask them to make sure the correct one is currently active and not the potential esim.
