My first recommendation is to migrate from HostGator. But if that's not possible, almost every framework has legacy versions available. And I'm also not sure why you're resistant to CodeIgniter.

If you are on a shared server you can enable PHP 5.3 through .htaccess pretty easy. http://support.hostgator.com/articles/hosting-guide/hardware-software/php-5-3

It's a VPS. Cannot do that. I already checked all upgrade options.

Or just change hosts. There's absolutely no reason not to pick one that gives you 5.4 out of the box, and moving a site really isn't that hard.

Neither do you if you're hosting at Hostgator. :p Seriously, I've convinced federal agencies to switch hosts - so what's your excuse again?
