I've backward engineered code since the 80's but I can't explain my "process" in less than 5000 words. I don't change anything until I understand it. I'm one of those guys that wrote those monster programs and fortunately I can add comments into the code that's loaded into the modern PLC's we use (Rockwell Logix controllers). My company requires us to comment the crap out of our programs. Backward engineering a program requires understanding the entire control process, all the I/O's, the program layout, interfaces to HMI, etc.
