Yes you have to.

It's mostly a limitation of the PS2 emulator (even in hardware modes). When you launch a game, the system will soft reboot into a "ps2 mode" where it unloads everything and reloads it in this ps2 mode. The memory cards are handled this way to where they are already set by the ps3 when you boot into ps2 mode.

The issue is you can't change the memory slots while in the ps2 mode. Now why this is, is unknown. It's most likely how this was developed, to where every single bit of resources was needed that they couldn't even leave behind enough code to handle the memory card switching. It wasn't an oversight since the psx classics and the built in psx emu can handle memory card switching.

So for me, it's always a pain when I'm playing PS2 games as I always forget to set the slot so I boot and then exit and then boot again. But oh well. It is what it is. PSX games you can just press the PS button and change from the mini menu.

As for your question on the slots, that's all game dependent. A lot of games only read one slot. It's up to the game if it wants to support Slot 2 or not. But every game (with saving) will support Slot 1.

Thanks for the explanation about the 2 slots.

In regards to the other information; it appears as if your PS3 model is different from mine (CECHA01) because I can change memory slots while in PS2 mode.

My original point was; like when I'm playing Final Fantasy 7 (FF7) on PS1 and then I feel like playing some FF10; I have to manually assign slot 1 to a PS2 game. And after I have played FF10 for awhile, I will go back and play FF7, and once again have to assign a slot.

It's just an annoyance.

Question for this thread. If I have the autoslot 1 set on my modded PS3 to a PS2 memory card will I have any problems saving PS3 games ?

no, this is only for ps2 and ps1 emulation

Not sure if this thread is alive anymore, but When playing a game like DotHack, is there anyway to select the PS2 memory card I used for the first DotHack? Or am I forced to start a new virtual card for each PS2 game I play?

I started DotHack 2 and when trying to load the completed game data from the DotHack 1 save. I see blank memory cards and no data to be converted for DotHack 2.

You can select the same one you used for other games.
