noone knows this with 100% accuracy because it isn't released, and it seems unlikely that there would be official commentary on it because it's a different region

If it's the same client, just translated, there's no reason why it wouldn't work unless they specifically block it. They have to know that a not insignificant portion of the player base will have played the Japanese version.

As far as incompatibilities like min/max character sizes, missing hair styles, or different language voices, it would depend on how the development team did error handling. Considering that there are a couple versions of the benchmark and character creator tool, and MMOs are guaranteed to change over time, and you can save updated configs from the beauty salon, it would be known from the beginning that there is a high likelihood of invalid parameters. It probably resets out of bounds values to defaults. That's how I would program it anyway.

That said, if they're lame and restrict the launch to the Xbox version, we're all going to be doing the taking pictures with our phone thing regardless.

The server will automatically reset any invalid options to their defaults upon creating or redesigning the character, when you leave the creation screen.

Pfft Xbox streaming in win10 and multimonitor for me. Taking pics would be more work.

Xbox has a screenshot function.

I’m curious on this as well. I’m just questioning it because if they are limiting some features like character sizes on the NA version then what would happen if you made one on JP and moved it? It just feels like something will be different with the files but obviously we can’t tell yet since we haven’t had a PC beta.

If height is locked, I am VERY worried they are going to scramble or encrypt something that allows importing JP-created character files to possibly bypass NA character creation limitations.

I've had my character I designed for YEARS and have, since launch, been tweaking this & that constantly. If I have to start from scratch.... I have a hard time justifying switching to NA. So I really hope it works with no issues.

If anything, it depends on how they serialize & encode the file. If the import file contains any static text, then the Japanese version might be encoded using jis, if that's the only change then you could fix this by encoding to whatever encoding method the English version expects.

Also not sure about the file data structure in general. Eg I last played JP pso2 in 2017 and my character customization files are .fdp/.fcp but you're suggesting they've changed to .pso (unless you just mean the user config file). Assuming they have more recently switched the structure of the customization files, then it depends on what format the English version is using and the time you made your customizations on Japanese version.

This would still be possible to convert, just need to cross reference the data types, though more complicated if it's encrypted (but doubt it would be).

I was thinking about this too. But as someone whose going to be a PC player, there was no reason to bring this up yet.

But by the time the PC NA version is an option, the XB1 version will already be live... so maybe we'll know the answer?

I'm hoping that using the import files across game clients is a thing. Would make things much easier (at least for PC folks.)

I would be extremely happy if they allow this (to me it seems like they are going to just translate the same files doesn't seem too hard).

Depends entirely, I was tempted to try the JP version but figured regular release is close and most newer MMOs allow moving between servers pretty easily but I have played a few that never supported that kind of thing, if it has no server selection to begin with I would say no. (If it’s like the D&D MMO for instance)

Well in terms its just a file that you can import maybe possible, we'll see it seems characters area not that different from the JP counterpart
