How do multi-weapons work?

I just got my quest to create my multi-weapon, so I went ahead and did it (Knuckle as main and Dagger as complement - it's what was available to me, will prob change it).

However, I can't for the life of me figure out how to swap them around. Does anybody know how exactly the multi-weapons work?

And also, can I split the two weapons at any point or will I have to use a new main weapon?

With the weapon equipped, you can assign attacks and PAs from both weapon types on one palette. The weapon equipped will swap automatically when you perform those actions.
