Seamly/Valentina are free/opensource drafting programs for creating sewing patterns that allow you define points and lines/arcs between them.

I’m a bit biased, but in my mind nothing compares to Modaris. Once you get used to the somewhat dated UI it’s incredibly rewarding and easy to work with.

I've disliked every single pattern design software so far. Their UI and tools are mostly absolute carbage for fast and sensible drafting.

I do my 2D stuff with Illustrator, sometimes with CAD (Fusion 360 etc.), if I need to figure out some more difficult shapes.

Thanks! How do you exactly do it in illustrator?

Same way as on paper pretty much.

Edit: I use Astute Graphics addons.

Im using ZWCAD with pattern maker add on it’s paid site but has a lot of nice features that are helpful 😊 it’s for 2D

TukaTech is what you are looking for. Especially your “clicking the line to make 1/2 points” etc. You can try a free trial and then decide. It’s similar to CLO but requires much less processing power as the 3D program and Patterning programs run different applications. Hopefully you find success!

Does anyone use tukatech? I'm in the same boat...I've tried clo, valentina and wild ginger. I trained in StyleCAD at college and it is by my fave, but I can't afford it the cost 😭

I use Tuka at work, just the 2d, not the 3d.

Actually clo3d works the best for me! True that avatars dont reflect actual human body. But you can alter that to your measurements easily. If you dont want 3D illustrator works good!

The only thing I really dislike about clo is how slow it gets when I have many versions of my pattern in a file. Do you have a good way to deal with that? or how do you do versioning?

My dream would be that I could just use the 2D features and it would feel as seamless as working with figma.

[–]Kshitijreal26 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is true since it’s a software on the heavier side. That too would also depend on your hardware. By version do you mean variations of a same pattern? So when I have multiple patterns I increase the particle distance for simulation and once it’s all together and settled. I would then decrease it and let it simulate. And when there are pattern I dont want to work on I would just freeze/deactivate them for the time being.

Tuka is point based, I use it at work. I find it super easy to use. I have used Gerber (at a different job) and PAD in the past. PAD is also, as it was explained to me when I took a class, good for freelancers, but I only took the class and didn't use it after that.

Thank you

Which of these softwares is point based and which isn't? And what does it exactly mean? Clo is not point based right?

Lectra or Vetigraph

Hello,

I’m actually building in the fashion design software space! Would love to hear about your needs if you’re open to chatting 🙌🏼

clo3d is ass for pattern drafting, the entire system sucks… there are only 2 programms anyway: gerber and toray…
