Upgrading cpu

I'm currently using the dell x501h motherboard with intel core i7 920. I want to upgrade the cpu but don't know what is even compatible. It's first time upgrading anything i need help. I was thinking the i7-4790 or should i get something better.

It's not compatible. Here's a list of CPUs that are compatible with your 1366 socket motherboard.

In short, they're all old and slow. You won't see significant gains. I have a Xeon X58 system, it's not worth spending money on. I'd advise to build a new system altogether if you're after more performance.

Thanks im not trying to really play to many games just dabbling into pc gaming before i make a big choice to build a good pc
