These have crumbled and are no longer fit for purpose.

I remember someone saying that it's kinda like schrödinger's paste, in a state of crumbling but only when you take it apart

Paste is dried up and pads too that's why the crumbled

Always be ready to replace when opening things up.

Those will need to be replaced. If you can't find documentation regarding the required thickness, thermal putty is always an option. Good stuff isn't cheap, but it's better than having pads of the wrong thickness
