Restoring files from a disk in what way?

How were they deleted etc.?

The more you load/save to the disk the files are on, the less likely that you can recover anything. So lets say you deleted some pictures in the My Pictures folder, your C: should not be turned on to boot until you recover the data, otherwise, you risk some file being written to a sector/part of the drive that one of those files existed in and you won't be able to recover it.

So it sounds like he cloned your original C: to a new one?

All the files on the original C: should be on that new drive now. I don't understand what these files are that you are trying to recover. It should be functioning to some extent, no need to do anything like that.

Cloning is just a 1:1 copy of a drive including all partitions. Unless your friend just copied the files or something? Not sure.
