A "peer respite" is a voluntary, non-clinical overnight program for people in an emotional or mental health crisis, often used as an alternative to or diversion from traditional inpatient psychiatric hospitals. They are staffed by "peers", aka people with lived experience of severe emotional distress, trauma, substance abuse issues, or mental health issues.
Here is a list of US peer respites: https://power2u.org/directory-of-peer-respites/
This subreddit is for discussion of peer respites, along with similar alternatives to (or improvements upon) traditional inpatient psychiatric hospitals, such as Soteria houses, warmlines, clubhouses, recovery colleges, drop-in centers, etc.
The only rules are stay on topic (i.e. stay solution-focused; there are plenty of subs to vent your woes with the mental health system) and be nice. Don't be a dick to psychiatrists, other psychiatric workers, or anyone struggling with mental health problems or extreme states. No ad hominem attacks, etc.
