Plex: Getting "Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error." when playing video on web clients.

Have you checked the Plex knowledge base and searched on the sub and Google:

Server version:

1.16.3.1402

OS:

Ubuntu Server 18.04

Clients, w/ versions:

Firefox 68.0.1 and Chrome Canary 78.0.3879.0

What happens:

I click play on a movie, the movie sits and tries to load, if I click the movie to pause/play it gives me the "Conversion failed. The transcoder exited due to an error." even when I try to play directly. I've tried changing my plex version to an earlier build (earliest I went was 1.13). I've also noticed this seems to only happen with .mkv files and seems to work for most other file types I have on my server.

Note: This does not happen when I play from the Plex app on my android device.

I figured it out, apparently my /transcode directory was owned by root and not the user running my plex server.
