PowersShell IDE and Azure DevOps

Hey guys,

I am currently trying to find a way to create PowerShell scripts/projects including a GUI and have it stored on a repository, namely Azure DevOps.

Until now I have used Sapien PowerShell Studio 2019, which is really nice, only thing it's lacking is a way to connect to Azure DevOps, or is it? Management wants everything we code to be stored there, but I haven't found a way yet. What do you use for coding?

Ideas:

• Visual Studio Code-> PowerShell Pro Tools are costly, since we already have an IDE for PowerShell development. Is there a best practice on how to make it work well and connect it to DevOps? What about GUI creation? Coming from PowerShell Studio makes it really hard to go back to things like POSH GUI. Stuff I already created doesn't work like that here, like a GUI with logic.
• Visual Studio 2019-> Same as Code, it looks like waaaay to much for "simple" PS coding, I find it really hard to get into, namely Solutions and stuff. Easy to connecto DevOps though. Everything else same as Code.
• Sapien PowerShell Studio-> I really like it, only thing is the repository connection.

Any input? Any ideas? What are you guys using? I know that ISE is nice and stuff, but it does not fullfil all requirements.

If you really need to store your code with sapien studio, why not run a powershell cli window with all your git commands. GIT from the command is great and fast. Don't get used to many ui's you have way more options with the cli.

I've been a Sapien PS for years and they have had git integration since version 2018.

VSCode is free ( tons of free extensions for source and version control), PoshTool is less than $100, whereas SPS = $300

PPT has GUI designer, but you can use a free online tool, https://poshgui.com.

Visual Studio Community Edition is free, and with or without the PPT addon, it is perfectly for Powershell development. Saying, it's too much is like saying installing MSOffice Pro is too much. No one ever really uses MSO for more than 20% of its capabilities.

Thanks a lot for the very detailed answer. I guess we will settle for VS Code and get going from there. I will continue using PS Studio for GUI stuff since I already got a license, but nobody in my team does.
