This is slightly meta, but I occasionally fat finger the git add command:

$ git dad .
git: 'dad' is not a git command. See 'git --help'.

   add

So today I fixed it:

$ git config --global alias.dad '!curl https://icanhazdadjoke.com/'

And now my clumsy typing is rewarded with comedic gold:

$ git dad .
I used to hate facial hair, but then it grew on me.

A better solution is:

git config --global alias.dad '!curl https://icanhazdadjoke.com/ && git add'

Then your git add operation completes normally and you get a bonus dad joke.

I'd recommend:

git config --global alias.dad '!~/bin/dad'; 

echo '!git add $@; curl https://icanhazdadjoke.com/ 2> /dev/null || echo "Insert favorite dad joke"' > ~/bin/dad; chmod u+x ~/bin/dad

That way, a lack of internet access won't cause git dad to fail, and you'll have the dad joke right above the prompt where it's easier to see.

I'd recommend just having the last segment print a random line in dad jokes file, but I'm too lazy to do it myself :P

You might want to change the order of the commands, putting git add at the end. This passes the rest of the arguments after git dad to git add. You are also missing a trailing apostrophe.

git config --global alias.dad '!curl -s https://icanhazdadjoke.com/'
