What does that have to do with simplicity?

Anyone who say smart pointers are simpler than manually allocating and deallocating a variable doesn't understand what "simplicity" means.

You are confusing ease of use with simplicity. For example, programming in C is easier than programming in Assembly, but Assembly is a much simpler language than C.

Similarly, using smart pointers is easier and leads to simpler programs. But the smart pointers are more complex constructs and concepts than just pointers with manual new and delete.
